Many people have heard of PHP and seen PHP sites, but they're not sure what PHP is exactly. PHP is a programming language that helps users create dynamic content web pages. It was developed by Danish programmer Rasmus Lerdorf in 1994 out of personal necessity. Lerdorf was maintaining his personal homepage with a set of Perl scripts; however, he wanted another way to display his resume and track the traffic that his page received. With that in mind, he developed a language for his personal home page. A year later in 1995, Personal Home Page Tools was publicly released and combined with his own Form Interpreter, and PHP/FI was born (or PHP version 2 as it's often known). Today, PHP is used for personal web pages and businesses alike. In addition, there are many version of PHP, but some of the most popular ones in use include PHP 4.3.1, PHP 4.4.4, and PHP 5.2.4.
